The lotus flower (July 31, 2009)
The lotus flower is a symbol of new beginnings and the infinite potential that each of us has. Visualizing a lotus flower slowly blooming and unfolding is a powerful image for a yogi or yogini to use during meditation practice.
Lokah samastha sukhino bhavantu (July 30, 2009)
This Sanskrit phrase translates into English as “May all beings everywhere be happy and free. May the thoughts and actions of my own life, contribute in some way, to the happiness and freedom for all”.
Practicing asanas with intention (July 29, 2009)
In his book Remember, Be Here Now, Ram Dass reminds us to consider our intention when practicing asanas. He says that if you undertake asanas as a form of exercise and with the purpose of changing your body that you will get exactly that, a better body. However, if we practice asana as a form of yoga then the change that we will see in our body will be one of ”calmness, sensitivity and lightness…all of which will facilitate your sadhana”. This book is an interesting combination of an autobiography, original artwork, and then what Dass calls a “cookbook” of ways to help you reach enlightenment in your life.
Be Present yoga pants (July 23, 2009)
Be Present is a small family-owned Colorado company that makes awesome yoga clothing. Their yoga pants (particularly the Agility Yoga Pants) are the best yoga pants I’ve ever owned. They are really lightweight, but stand up to just about anything. The design is really comfortable, but they are funky enough (particularly the ones with the lotus and other symbols embroidered on the back) to just wear out and about too. Check out their yoga pants and other great yoga clothing at the Be Present website.
